Boards and Commissions Detail

Commission on Children and Families

Purpose:

The CCF is a diverse group of volunteers appointed by the Board of County Commissioners to create a bright future for children and families in Washington County. The Commission's charge is to help every child reach their full potential and to support families and the community in achieving that goal. Working with many partners, the Commission looks at conditions in the community that affect children and families and recommends planned strategies and funding to improve those conditions.

The Washington County Commission on Children and Families is part of a statewide network of commissions. The State Commission sets broad policy direction and determines county allocations. Each local county commission on children and families must, by statute, unite diverse community partners in the creation of a comprehensive plan for children and families.

The Commission has three standing committees: Strategies, which after evaluating community conditions, best practices and outcomes, develops the local comprehensive plan; Programs, which reviews the programs contracted through the Commission's funding streams; and Community Engagement, which works to strengthen community involvement. The local commission also has several advisory boards, including a Youth Advisory Board composed of young people from throughout the county.

In addition to recommending funding for key services for children and families, the Commission administers a small grants fund (up to $1000) to support the development of assets (developmental assets as defined by the Search Institute of Minnesota (www.search-institute.org) in the community.
