Criminal Prosecution

This is the largest division within the District Attorney's Office.  The attorneys reviewed over 11,200 police reports in 2012, referred from all of the law enforcement agencies in the county.  The DA's Office is the sole prosecutor of felony crimes occurring within the county and handles the vast majority of all misdemeanor crimes.

The District Attorney is responsible for prosecuting all types of cases – everything from traffic matters to homicides, including physical and sexual assaults, burglaries, thefts, drug crimes, domestic violence charges, and driving while under the influence of intoxicants.

Deputy district attorneys provide after-hours assistance to law enforcement agencies and participate in a variety of multidisciplinary and multi-jurisdictional teams.  These include the Child Abuse and Elder Abuse Multidisciplinary Teams, the Major Crimes Team, the Sexual Assault Response Team, and the Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Team.  Other collaborative efforts include participation in regional and county interagency narcotics teams, the Interagency and Regional Gang Enforcement Teams, the Fraud and Identity Theft Enforcement team and, in conjunction with the US Attorney's Office, Project Safe Neighborhood, dealing with the illegal use of firearms.
