Addiction means a loss of control. It’s not something that is planned, but it is devastating to the addicted individual, as well as to their family friends and co-workers. In Oregon, 8 of the 10 leading causes of death are, at least partially, caused by the use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs. About 9% of Oregon youth 12 to 17 years old, abuse, or are dependent on, alcohol or illicit drugs. Alcohol is the most widely used addictive substance in Oregon. About two-thirds of adult men and more than half of adult women in Washington County report drinking alcohol in the past 30 days. Conservative estimates show that almost 30,000 Washington County residents abuse, or are dependent on, alcohol and are in need of treatment. In addition, over 11,400 county residents, 12 and older, abuse, or are dependent on, illicit drugs.
