Providers

Washington County’s Department of Health and Human Services (WCHHS) assures the delivery of chemical dependency and problem gambling treatment services. The Department contracts with a number of addiction treatment providers in the community, located geographically throughout the county. WCHHS, in partnership with the state of Oregon, provides funding for chemical dependency and gambling treatment services.  Therefore, cost will not be a barrier to service.

Gambling

In 2006-2007, almost 2,000 individuals were treated for problem/pathological gambling through Oregon’s nationally renowned publicly funded programs.  Though most people do not have problems associated with gambling, a growing number do.  Of the 2,000 people in treatment, the average gambling debt was just over $26,000.  About 50 percent of problem gamblers in treatment worked full time, and more than 21 percent reported committing crimes to obtain gambling money.  Most reported they either jeopardized or lost a significant relationship or job because of gambling.  Just like with an addiction to a substance, gambling addiction can be devastating to the individual, their family, and their friends.

To address problem and pathological gambling, Oregon boasts one of the leading prevention and treatment systems in the world.  Oregon’s Problem Gambling Services are funded through 1% of the Oregon State Lottery’s net proceeds.  Therefore, treatment is free to anyone who wants it.  Not only is treatment free, it is confidential and it works!
