We have a very active volunteer program with a variety of roles to assist us with helping the animals. Our volunteers work 7 days a week, 365 days per year including Sundays, holidays and weekday mornings. Some of the volunteer jobs that we need most include:
Shelter Assistant Program: This 4 hour training is where all new volunteers start. Learn hands-on with a staff member and get a taste for what it's like to volunteer at our shelter. Shelter Assistants do enrichment prep for the animals (stuffed Kongs, treat bags, etc.) and perform important cleaning tasks in addition to learning about animal body language and important information about the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter.
Dog Volunteers: All dog volunteers work their way through our 4 level Open Paw Program, earning increasing responsibility and interaction with the dogs through training, practice, and assessments. Dog volunteers help the dogs by cleaning kennels, doing dishes, doing laundry, feeding, preparing enrichment, general cleaning, and providing socialization, enrichment, and training according to the Open Paw program.
Cat Volunteers: Cat volunteers perform daily AM cleaning of both occupied and vacant cat kennels in addition to feeding, cleaning litter boxes, and observing health and behavior of each cat in the adoption area, general cleaning, washing animal food and water dishes, litter pans, and laundry. Volunteers also use the Open Paw program to help cats relax here in the shelter and to learn to trust strangers.
Kitten/Mother Cat Foster Care: We receive hundreds of cats with tiny kittens every year, and need loving homes where the mama cats can safely raise their babies until the kittens are old enough to be adopted. You can fill out a foster application online or call us with questions.
We occasionally have openings for positions in administration, events, outreach, customer service, marketing, photography, and more which may or may not include working directly around or with the animals.
