Get Involved
Washington County Disability, Aging and Veteran Services provides many opportunities to get involved. Below are a few of the opportunities that can be available to those looking to volunteer.
Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA)
SHIBA can help Medicare beneficiaries make good health insurance decisions; provide confidential, uniform and objective health insurance assistance to Medicare beneficiaries, identify gaps in insurance laws and regulations and communicate those problems to policy makes; and support and recognize the efforts of volunteers. This is a great opportunity to those who enjoy helping others in a one-on-one environment or in a classroom setting.
Project REACH
As a trained Project REACH volunteer, you will meet with an individual in person to assess their situation, then help and support them until they get the services needed. A REACH volunteer can help find the services needed, make telephone calls or research resources for information, complete forms and applications for services or resources, problem-solve and navigate application processes and follow-up with the individual to make sure they get the services they need.
Information and Referral Volunteer Specialist
Information and Referral specialists work out of the senior centers identified in Washington County. The volunteer primarily works one-on-one with senior and/or family caregiver to identify needs, shares information with senior and/or family caregiver about community services available to meet their need(s), assists with making telephone calls if necessary, ensures that data is accurately entered into the client database in a timely manner and follows up to make sure senior or family caregiver gets the services needed.
Veteran Case Aid Assistant Volunteer
Veteran Case Aid Assistants would provide high level administrative support to our Veteran Service Coordinators in daily upkeep of claim files and appeals for the agency. Some of the duties include maintaining files, index and record keeping systems which require sorting, filing, retrieving, and distributing records or other documents, research case topics/issues for Veteran Service Coordinator in relation to claims via computer and telephone, assist in special mailings, basic data entry into office databases, operate computer hardware and software including Word and Excel and organize files and prepare them for laser fiche.
