Transportation Development Tax to increase July 1

For Immediate Release: Thursday, April 21, 2016

Sponsored by: Department of Land Use & Transportation, Planning & Development Services Division

Washington County Transportation Development Tax (TDT) rates will increase by 2.03 percent, effective July 1.

Once the increase takes effect, the TDT rate for a single-family detached home, for example, will be $8,278 – an increase of $165 more than the 2015-16 rate of $8,113. TDT is based on the average estimated traffic generated by new development of that type, and is paid by developers to fund transportation projects including road improvements, sidewalks, bike lanes and transit upgrades such as bus shelters. TDT rates are adjusted annually based on a five-year rolling average of road construction, labor and right-of-way costs.

The rate increase was approved Tuesday (April 19) by the Board of Commissioners. County code calls for the Board to act on TDT adjustments annually before May 1.

Visit the Transportation Development Tax /TDT webpage or the Transportation Development Tax Rate Schedule for more information.

Washington County is committed to protecting the uses of the land and to building and maintaining a great transportation system--balancing care for the natural environment, economic development, safety and community livability.
