Walking has significant social benefits, but like any activity, it does involve some element of risk.  When done safely, walking can improve the health of individuals, reduce air pollution and traffic congestion, and increase the sense of safety in your community with more people out and about.  However, walking must be taken seriously.  In 2008 in the in the United States, 69,000 pedestrians were injured in traffic crashes and nearly 5,000 were killed.  Fatalities and injuries can be reduced if both drivers and pedestrians take care and respect each other's presence on the road.  The following pages have been developed to help you walk in a safer, more educated manner, so you can keep on walking!
