185th (TV Hwy to Kinnaman)
As per the County Transportation Plan, SW 185th Avenue is functionally classified as an arterial roadway. Ultimately as an arterial, this road is expected to be constructed to a 5-lane section, which includes a continuous center turn lane.
The MSTIP 3C funding for this project provides for interim 3 lane road improvements to SW 185th Avenue generally between SW Shaw Street and SW Kinnaman Road.
Existing Conditions
Starting at Tualatin Valley (TV) Highway, the north section of 185th Avenue is a 5-lane Roadway with a continuous center turn lane south of Blanton Street. The roadway then tapers to a 2-lane roadway section south of Blanton until reaching Kinnaman Road. Much of the roadway is uncurbed, with ditches on both sides of the roadway.
Currently, there are no bike lanes with only limited sidewalks in the central portion of the project site. The north and south ends of the project area have existing sidewalks. Two intersecting local roads (Vincent Street and Wheeler Court) have gravel shoulders with no sidewalks or bike lanes. Other intersecting roads have sidewalks.
The existing roadway carries periodic heavy traffic with traffic backups extending from the TV Highway signal south and from the Kinnaman Road signal to the north. There is traffic congestion and confusion at the north end of the project site near the Aloha Post Office apparently due to merging lanes, conflicting turning movements and ingress/egress movements related to the post office access.
The History link to the right describes the public involvement and design process leading the road design now being developed.
Approved Road Design
The road design authorized by the County Engineer for continued development includes the following features:
- At the north end of 185th near the Post Office, the existing 5-lane section will be extended to just South of Blanton Street (east).
- At that point the roadway will transition to 3 lanes including a continuous center turn lane. The 3 lanes continue south to just past Vincent St and then transition back to 5 lanes. The 5-lane road section will extend from north of Kinnaman to the near the first driveway entrance into Aloha High School.
- Where the road is narrower than 5 lanes, those road improvements will include curbs, sidewalks, bike lanes (on both sides), underground storm drainage with catch basins, street lighting, surface storm runoff, water quality treatment, traffic signal improvements at Kinnaman Road, roadside tree plantings and retaining walls where appropriate.
- Where the new road narrows to less than the full 5 lane width, permanent road improvements are held to the west side of the ultimate road Right-of-Way width.
As part of a future project the roadway will be constructed to a full 5-lane section for the length of the project. Timing and funding of that future work has not yet been determined.
