The Records Section office is often a visitor's first stop at the Sheriff's Office because it provides cashier services for all the services we provide to citizens. For instance, if you want to pay a fee for your concealed handgun license, have your fingerprints taken, purchase a copy of a police report, or even post security (bail) to have a person released from jail, you will need to pay the appropriate fee at the Records Section Office. A receipt will be issued for you to take to the office that actually provides the specific service you need.
The Criminal Records Section uses state of the art technology to store, track, and retrieve crime related reports from the time a crime is reported until it is fully investigated and prosecuted. In addition to reports written by Sheriff's Office deputies, administrative staff, and detectives, the Sheriff's Office also has a contract with several cities to maintain their police records.
Public Records Requests
Much of the information that the Sheriff's Office stores is routinely available to the public for a fee:
Non-criminal accident reports
Some property crimes reports
Basic information on arrested adults
Basic information on juveniles taken into custody
Sheriff's Office policies or procedures
Of course there are exceptions under the law that restrict the release of some records in order to protect juveniles, cases under investigation, the security of the Sheriff's Office personnel or the facility, etc. Some requests are not readily available without a manager or commander's approval. The first step in the process is to complete a Public Records Request form and to submit the estimated fee. If the information you need is not immediately available, Records Section Staff will let you know if or when the information is expected to be releasable.
