Washington County, along with many other public and private sector organizations, is placing a growing emphasis on "sustainability" as a framework for planning, policy development and management.  The County is committed to building upon and expanding its sustainability initiatives and practices, and recognizes the importance of providing leadership in this area as a reflection of: 1) effective public administration; 2) health and well being of our community; and 3) concern for future generations.  For our purposes, sustainability is defined as meeting current economic, social and environmental needs while ensuring that future generations can meet their needs.

As reflected in the approved Resolution and Order and its Attachment "A", the County's approach to sustainability is a process of continual improvement framed by four milestones:  1) assess opportunities; 2) create action plans; 3) implement action plans; and 4) evaluate and report results.  In addition, the County's sustainability efforts will be based on a fundamental set of guiding principles and focused objectives.
