Facilities

Q: Is the Facilities Division taking additional precautions to prevent the spread of flu?

A: Maintaining cleanliness is a priority for our PHC custodial contractor. Based on advice from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and industry best practices, PHC will clean and sanitize common surfaces, door knobs, elevator buttons and restrooms regularly. Hand sanitizer, tissues and wipes are also available in common and public areas within County facilities. PHC also has a continuity of operations plan to ensure cleaning services are continued during periods of absenteeism. Given the resource limitations of janitorial staff during the day, please use available cleaning products to wipe down high traffic counter tops and equipment on a regular basis.

Q: Does the CDC have any special recommendations for air conditioned buildings?

A: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that the odds of transmitting the H1N1 influenza through heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems is extremely remote and special cleaning of air ducts is not recommended.

The County has invested in state-of-the-art air filtration systems and will continue to monitor and maintain these systems. Nevertheless, your actions to prevent the spread of the flu can help even more, including getting a flu shot, covering your coughs and sneezes, washing your hands frequently and staying home when sick.

Q: How long can a virus like H1N1 live on a surface outside its host?

A: Studies have shown that flu viruses can survive on hard surfaces for approximately two hours after being left on items like cafeteria tables, doorknobs and desks. Your help in keeping work and common-area surfaces clean with disinfectant wipes with alcohol is appreciated.
