For Supervisors

Q: Can I send an employee who is exhibiting flu-like symptoms home?

A: Yes, however, contact your division manager and Human Resources Liaison for guidance.

Q: What if an employee who appears ill does not want to leave work?

A: Talk to the employee and let them know that they appear ill, that you are concerned for their health and suggest that they go home to take care of themselves. You can also explain that the County is obligated to provide a healthy workplace and you have a concern that the employee may pose a risk to others. Usually, after an employee hears your concern, they will feel comfortable going home. If they continue to refuse, contact your division manager and HR Liaison for guidance.  If sent home, the employees' time is to be covered by sick leave, or some other type of paid or unpaid leave.

Q: I think my employee is sick. What can I ask the employee about their health?

A: You are allowed to ask some health-related questions of employees. Some examples include:

  • You don't look like you feel very well. Do you feel alright?
  • Are you sick?
  • Do you need to go home?
  • Can I call someone for you?

Q: Can I require a doctor's note to return to work?

A: Yes, but based on recommendation from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), employees will not be required to provide a doctor's note to return to work unless specifically requested by the appointing authority. The CDC is concerned about overburdening the health care system with recovering patients, limiting time and access to those most in need.  As long as the employee has been without a fever for 24 hours (without the use of medication) they are cleared to return to work.

Q: I have other questions that are not addressed here, who do I call?

A: Your manager is your first point of contact. If for some reason your supervisor or department manager is not available, you can view Human Resources liaison information at the following link to find out which Human Resources liaison is responsible for your department at http://www.co.washington.or.us/Support_Services/HR/contact.cfm. Human Resources will help seek out the answer to your questions, or refer your question to the correct area of the County.

You can also e-mail your question to stoptheflu@co.washington.or.us and staff will route your question to the appropriate person for an answer.
