Washington County Administrator Robert Davis announced today that Andrew Singelakis will lead the county's Department of Land Use and Transportation (LUT) beginning in early March.

Singelakis is currently the deputy director of the City of Tucson's (population 550,000) Department of Transportation, which has a budget of approximately $200 million and 700 employees, including transit services. From 1997 to 2004, Singelakis was the executive director of the Nashua, New Hampshire, Regional Planning Commission, which is the metropolitan planning organization responsible for land use and transportation planning and environmental management for a 12-community region with a population of 250,000 located 35 miles from Boston. Earlier, he served as the director of planning for the Town of Brunswick, Maine, and as a planner for communities in Vermont, New Hampshire and New York.

Singelakis' educational background includes a master of science degree in urban planning from Columbia University in New York City as well as a master of public health degree, also from Columbia.

"Andrew's experience in New England and Arizona covers most of the areas that comprise our Department of Land Use & Transportation, in both size and scope," said Davis. "From all accounts, Andrew comes to us highly recommended as a respected, talented and dedicated professional, and we are looking forward to having him join our team."

Washington County's Department of Land Use and Transportation is responsible for a wide range of transportation, planning, permitting and road-maintenance services. The department is supported by an annual budget of $191.4 million and is staffed by 341 full-time-equivalent positions.
