May is National Building Safety Month and Bicycle Safety Month.
Media release

The Washington County Board of Commissioners proclaimed May National Building Safety Month and Bicycle Safety Month in its Tuesday meeting. The proclamations support the work performed by Building Services and promote bicycle safety countywide.

Building Safety Month

Read the proclamation

Founded by the International Code Council, Building Safety Month is celebrated each May to raise awareness about critical building safety issues, building codes and the officials who enforce them. Homes and other buildings built in compliance with building safety codes result in resilient, safe structures that minimize the risks of death, injury and property damage.

This year’s theme is “Mission Possible.” Throughout May, LUT will reinforce the importance of building safety starting at home, the work of building safety professionals, advocating for safe communities and solving challenges together.

Bicycle Safety Month

Read the proclamation

Bicycle Safety Month is promoted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and supports public education about how to make biking safer and more reliable. Traffic safety is a shared responsibility. Drivers, bicyclists and transportation agencies need to work together to encourage and support a safe biking environment.

LUT supports bicycle safety by identifying major corridors that need bike infrastructure. We then design and build improvements like bike lanes, buffered bike lanes and cycle tracks. We also share bicycle safety messages with all types of travelers throughout the year. Learn more.
