Moving 99 Forward

Washington County's Department of Land Use and Transportation, the City of Tigard and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) announce that long-anticipated plans for intersection improvements at SW Hall Boulevard and Highway 99W are set to begin in early May 2010, with anticipated completion by the end of the year.  And there is a bonus. The city of Tigard says that improvements to the SW Greenburg Road/Main Street and Highway 99W intersection will begin at the same time. Project information is available at: www.wc-roads.com

Improvements include new turning lanes on SW Hall and SW Greenburg, an additional eastbound through-lane on Highway 99W, and new sidewalks and bicycle lanes. The southwest corner of Hall and 99W will become a city gateway welcoming travelers to Tigard.  The improvements to both intersections will provide better functioning interchanges, improve safety, and help motorists; bicyclists and pedestrians get to work, school, shopping and home a little more efficiently.

But that's after the construction is completed. In the meantime access will still be available through the construction zone but unfortunately there will be added delays. Much of the work is scheduled at night with the goal to have it completed by the end of the year.

A number of resources are available to help deal with the construction issues. A website  www.wc-roads.com provides the schedule, previews of the improvements, suggestions for alternative routes, contact information for project team members and the opportunity to provide input during construction (is there something we could be doing better?) A Twitter site: http://twitter.com/99w_tigard is available for project updates, and a telephone hotline, (503) 846-7807, is ready for questions or feedback. And starting April 30 to talk to a project staff representative in person, come by Friday morning from 8:00 – 8:30 a.m. at the McDonalds on SW Main Street throughout construction.

This is a collaborative process. Highway 99W and SW Hall Boulevard are both state highways under the jurisdiction of ODOT. Along with SW Greenburg Road and Main Street, all are in Tigard's city limits. Washington County is managing the project in close coordination with the other two jurisdictions. Funding is coming from the City of Tigard, ODOT and Washington County.

Since the projects were first announced in early 2008, needed right-of-way has been acquired and utilities crews have begun preliminary work. This project bid March 24, 2010, the low bidder was Kerr Contractors, Inc. of Woodburn Oregon. Washington County Board of Commissioners will be awarding the construction contract at the April 6, 2010 board meeting.   A "Meet the Contractor" Open House is scheduled for April 27, 2010 from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the City of Tigard Public Works Building.

Washington County thanks you for your patience and careful attention to driving.
