Washington County is committed to the health, wellness and safety of employees, their families and the broader community. The impending flu season has the potential of impacting the health and wellness of our families and neighbors and ultimately the operations of the County. Guided by the notion that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," staff is working diligently on prevention and wellness activities as well as developing plans to maintain critical services in the potential event of high staff absenteeism.

In terms of prevention, employees are encouraged to receive their H1N1 and seasonal flu shots at their earliest convenience from their regular health care provider or pharmacist. We also encourage employees to follow the advice of medical professionals and cover coughs and sneezes and wash hands and/or use sanitizing liquid frequently. These important steps are the best way to manage exposure to the flu and optimize chances of remaining healthy through the winter. Finally, as illness occurs, we request employees stay home when sick. Working while sick can be detrimental to you, your family, co-workers and the public we serve. Health-related guidance about flu prevention and symptoms and other hot topics can be found at the Department of Health and Human Services' Web site at: www.co.washington.or.us/flu.
