Proclamation for LGBTQ Pride Month
For Immediate Release: Tuesday, May 21, 2019
Board of Commissioners issue first-ever LGTBQ Pride Proclamation
Today, for the first time, the Washington County Board of Commissioners has proclaimed June 2019 as LGBTQ Pride Month in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning neighbors, coworkers, friends and family members.
The proclamation references the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising of New York on June 28, 1969 when LGBTQ patrons fought back against ongoing police raids at the Stonewall Inn. This event is considered to have been the catalyst for the “Gay Rights Movement.”
Board Chair Kathryn Harrington remarked, “The importance of today’s proclamation cannot be overstated. As allies we have to speak up and speak out for our LGBTQ friends, family and neighbors. As County Chair, I am proud to have the support of my colleagues as we mark this important anniversary in America’s fight for civil rights and equality.”
