Fair Complex Planning

Friendship Square ApproachIt is great to see construction underway on the Event Center and exciting that so much more potential exists for the Fair Complex. Accordingly, an update of the 2008 Master Plan focused on the western portion of the Fair Complex site has begun. This new planning emphasizes multi-use improvements to benefit county residents and visitors year-round, while maintaining the long-term success of the County Fair and other current uses. It is being guided by the Fairgrounds Advisory Committee (FAC) which will make recommendations to
the Board of Commissioners.

Master Plan Update - What's New?

The first several months of the project were spent surveying community interest and reviewing the existing conditions of Fair Complex buildings and open space. The building analysis draws heavily on a recent structural assessment of the site. All this information is now combined with the long-term operational and business needs of the Fair Complex in a Draft Program that proposes long-term improvements for the site. At their January 9th meeting, the FAC asked that the items listed in the Draft Program be developed further and presented as draft plan concepts at their February 20th meeting.

The next several months will be spent developing concepts for the FAC’s review. In May, this information will be available broadly for review and public comment.

Stay Informed and Involved

More than 3,700 county residents conveyed their hopes for the Fair Complex last summer and fall, and many asked to be kept apprised of progress and opportunities to comment on draft concepts. Sign up for periodic updates by entering your name and address. View past updates here.

Keeping It Real

When complete, the new Fair Complex Master Plan will set a big vision for the future, which is great. However, there is a need to steward existing facilities to meet current need with existing resources. That is why the Master Plan also will include strategies to make smaller, incremental improvements to the Fair Complex over time.

Fairgrounds Advisory Committee

The Board of County Commissioners created the nine-member Fairgrounds Advisory Committee (FAC) in the fall of 2010 to provide advice and counsel to the Board of Commissioners on the Fairgrounds Master Plan, Fairgrounds Capital Projects Plan and other major site-related initiatives. The Fair Board President (or designee) represents the Fair Board on the committee. Other members of the FAC represent various countywide stakeholders in the success of the Fair event and use of the fairgrounds property.
