Medical Examiner's Office

Medicolegal death investigators investigate all sudden or unexpected deaths within the jurisdiction of Washington County.

Medical-legal death investigators (MLDIs) conduct investigations to determine the identity of the deceased, establish the approximate date and time of death, the circumstances immediately surrounding the death, and the cause and manner of death. During the course of an investigation, an MLDI may respond to the scene, interview witnesses, take photographs, obtain evidence and property, and assist with notifying the next-of-kin.

If further examination is needed, the State Medical Examiner or Deputy State Medical Examiner/Forensic Pathologist may order an autopsy. This is performed at the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s facility in Clackamas, Oregon.
