Washington County proclaims May 2015 National Building Safety Month

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, May 05, 2015

Sponsored by: Department of Land Use and Transportation

Building Safety Month LogoThe Washington County Board of Commissioners joins with the Department of Land Use & Transportation (LUT) and other agencies across the nation to declare the month of May 2015 as "NATIONAL BUILDING SAFETY MONTH." This year's theme is "Resilient Communities Start with Building Codes."

Founded by the International Code Council (ICC), Building Safety Month is celebrated by jurisdictions worldwide during the month of May with a month-long public awareness campaign to help individuals, families and businesses understand what it takes to create and sustain safe and sustainable structures. The campaign reinforces the need for adoption of modern, model building codes, a strong and efficient system of code enforcement and a well-trained, professional workforce to maintain the system.

The campaign is presented by the ICC and its nearly 60,000 members worldwide along with a diverse partnership of professionals from the building construction, design and safety community. Corporations, government agencies, professional associations, non-profits and more come together to support National Building Safety Month because they understand the need for safe and sustainable structures where we live, work and play.

"For Building Safety Month, the Department of Land Use & Transportation will be reinforcing the importance of emergency preparedness, green construction and code safety," said Andrew Singelakis, Director of Land Use & Transportation. An educational display has been set up in the lobby of the Washington County Public Services Building, 155 N. First Avenue, in Hillsboro. LUT's Building Services section will also have National Building Safety Month materials available at the 2015 Public Works Fair adjacent to the Beaverton Farmers' Market on Saturday, May 16, 2015 between 8:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
