Cornelius Pass Road (Cornell to U.S. 26)

About

About the project:

Cornelius Pass Road is a heavily used north/south arterial roadway. It is an important commuter and truck route connecting Highway 30 in Multnomah County to Tualatin Valley Highway in southern Hillsboro. Cornelius Pass Road, between Cornell Road and U.S. 26, carries about 40,000 vehicles per day. It is not adequate for existing traffic and projected traffic growth.

This project will widen Cornelius Pass Road, between Cornell Road and U.S. 26, to three lanes in each direction with a center median and dedicated turn lanes at several intersections, including U.S. 26.

Additional improvements include:

  • Sidewalks on both sides of the roadway
  • Buffered bike lane on the west side of the road
  • Separated two-way bike path on the east side
  • Intersection upgrades
  • Additional street lighting (south to Aloclek Drive)

The $18.3 million project is funded through a combination of sources including private development, Phase 3d of the County's Major Streets Transportation Improvement Program (MSTIP), state of Oregon Immediate Opportunity Funds (IOF) and the city of Hillsboro's Transportation Development Tax and Traffic Impact Fee programs.

The contractor is beginning to work on new portions of the project, which means to expect new work zones and traffic patterns.

  • Expect to see construction work begin on the west side of Cornelius Pass Road, as well as on Cornell Road east and west of Cornelius Pass Road.
  • The TriMet bus stop on the north side of Cornell Road (just west of Cornelius Pass Road) is temporarily closed for the next few months.
  • Expect changes to traffic patterns on Cornelius Pass Road (between Cornell Road and US Highway 26) where traffic will be directed to new northbound lanes as updated traffic signals are activated.
  • Switching to the new traffic signals will require signal shutdowns. This night work will include flaggers to direct traffic. Dates to be determined.
