NW Cornelius Pass Road to close June 22

Cornelius Pass Road Closure June 22
Media release

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, June 09, 2010

Sponsored by: Department of Land Use and Transportation, Division

Washington County’s Department of Land Use and Transportation announces that NW Cornelius Pass Road, between Kian Lane (near Quatama) and Samantha Lane (near Baseline) will close on June 22, 2010 for six to eight months.  The closure is necessary to replace the bridge over Beaverton Creek.  The new bridge will be approximately 12 feet higher at the center and 182 feet in length.

During the closure all traffic, including pedestrians and bicycles, will be detoured to Cornell, NE 229th/ NE 231st and Baseline roads.  Trucks are encouraged to use 185th Avenue as their designated north-south route. Road closure signs and a detour route will be posted in advance of the closure. Traffic signal timing along the detour route will be adjusted to accommodate additional traffic; improvements to 231st Avenue have been made to help with pedestrian and bicycle safety. Local access to properties within the closed portion will be available at all times. The east/west Quatama crossing will remain open.

Other improvements to Cornelius Pass Road include four travel lanes and a center lane, two bike lanes, sidewalks, a new traffic signal at the Quatama intersection, street lights, and upgrades to the City of Hillsboro and Tualatin Valley Water District waterlines. These improvements will improve traffic flow and safety for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions.  Washington County is aware that Cornelius Pass Road between Wilkins and Cornell is also a major bottleneck.  We are hoping to improve that section in the future as funding becomes available.

This project is funded through a combination of City of Hillsboro and Washington County traffic impact fees and county property tax funds (MSTIP).  For more details please contact the county’s Capital Project Management division at (503) 846-7800 or visit the project website at www.wc-roads.com

Washington County is committed to building and maintaining the best transportation system, ensuring the safety of all roadway users, and operating the county roadway system in a cost-effective and environmentally responsible manner.
